broadsides and ephemera – june 5th

On June 5 2009 the new Field Assembly record “Broadsides and Ephemera” will be available for purchase. The release will correspond with a couple of performances on the same date. I’m planning something pretty exciting with some fantastic musicians/friends – we’ll be performing the record live in its entirety, attempting to recreate as close as possible the elements found on each recorded song.

I may be playing some of these songs on my own in advance, but i haven’t confirmed any shows yet. Stay tuned…

mixmaster

Heading to Toronto this weekend to make final mixing decisions with Dean Drouillard. Dean is a fantastic producer/guitarist/musician, and he did a great job on the last ten year drought record. Most of the songs are already very close to finished, but I’m counting on Dean to correct some bad decisions and provide some much needed objectivity. Still deciding on track order, but i can tell you that the record will be 9 songs long and titled “Broadsides and Ephemera”.

broadsides and ephemera

the end is in sight.

i’m waffling over the inclusion of a new song that has sprung up in the past few days but essentially i believe the songs that will comprise the first field assembly record are already sitting on my external hard drive. i’ve booked dean drouillard’s fantastic ears for a weekend in january to fine-tune the mixes, following which i’ll resist my editorial urges and send the album to master.

i don’t really want to unveil the new songs until they’re mixed, but i can’t resist… you’ll find a rough mix of some new music uploaded on the godamn awful myspace site if you’re interested in having a peep.

cruel, cruel summer

hello.

still writing, recording, editing, rewriting, tinkering, cursing, deleting, re-recording, re-writing, etc.

i’ve already written, recorded, and scrapped at least half a dozen songs that were intended for release on this next record. i will admit i am somewhat worried about the possibility of over-self-editing, but i generally trust my instincts in these cases. there were some songs that made sense in a ten year drought kind of way that, while nice, just seem to stick out in an uncomplimentary way when nestled in the newer material. and i really do prefer the new material. still there has been some good progress. if you’re reading this, thanks for giving a shit.

nomenclature

I’ve been struggling with the question of what to call my post-ten year drought musical output. The obvious choice is to record and perform under my name, but this is problematic for a variety of reasons… so after much wasted time and thought I’ll be recording/producing music as “field assembly“. Hopefully this will provide some artistic and collaborative freedom that is ill-afforded by a strictly eponymous pursuit. Also it’s more google-friendly…
